Seaweed Farming Intensified Print

The Provincial Fisheries and Aquatic Resources office is expanding seaweed farming in all coastal barangays in Negros Oriental, Provincial Fishery officer Leonardo Aro said.

The seaweed farmers in bais City and Manjuyod are now charging P38 per kilo of dried seaweeds to buyers from Cebu for the international market. The dried seaweeds that are being used as ingredients for food, for industrial applications and as fertilizers are exported to Korea, Japan and China.

Aro said seaweed farms are located in Bais City and Manjuyod and patches of farms in other neighboring municipalties. The demand is high but the supply is very low because of the limited production, said. He added that they are expanding the program on seaweed farming to interested individuals. They have put up a seaweed farm in Barangay Tapon Norte in the town of San Jose in cooperation with the local government unit, he added.
