The
Provincial Fisheries and Aquatic Resources office is expanding seaweed farming
in all coastal barangays in Negros Oriental, Provincial Fishery officer
Leonardo Aro said.
The seaweed farmers in bais City and Manjuyod are now
charging P38 per kilo of dried seaweeds to buyers from Cebu for the
international market. The dried seaweeds that are being used as ingredients for
food, for industrial applications and as fertilizers are exported to Korea,
Japan and China.
Aro said seaweed farms are located in Bais City and Manjuyod
and patches of farms in other neighboring municipalties. The demand is high but
the supply is very low because of the limited production, said. He added that
they are expanding the program on seaweed farming to interested individuals.
They have put up a seaweed farm in Barangay Tapon Norte in the town of San Jose
