DOST Holds Energy Gab Print
Written by The Visayan Daily Star
The Department of Science and technology in Negros Oriental held a two-day training on energy management, conservation and audit measures from various key sectors in the community, recently, a Philippine Information Agency, press release said.

The training is response to the economic growth in the province which is seen to drive up the demand for energy, in the mist of rising energy costs and concerns for environmental sustainability. In a forum, assistant regional director for technical operations Edilberto Paradela of the DOST also raised the concern over the limited supply of fossil fuels, which are needed in generating electricity.

Primary sources of energy consist of petroleum, coal and natural gas which amounts to an 86.4 percent share for fossil fuels in primary energy consumption in the world, the press release said.

Fossil fuels are non-renewable resources as they take millions of years to form and current reserves are being completed faster than new ones are being formed, according to studies conducted by the United States government’s Energy Information Administration. Paradela stressed the need for households  and businesses alike to conserve energy which also at the same time protect the environment, the press release said.

Dominador Tragico, Jr. of the Negros Oriental Electric Cooperative 2 said, once the fossil fuel runs out, focus will be placed on renewable energy which is very slow to develop. Tragic disclosed that by the third quarter of last year, the generation company has advised NORECO 2 that there will be a power deficit by 2010, the press release said.

He, however, quickly assured they are ready to meet the growing power needs of the province. The DOST has been spear-heading the conduct of trainings in the provinces to help promote awareness on the importance of energy conservation , the press release added.
